India is an active member of the International Cricket Council with Test, ODI and T20I status. Players selected to represent India are selected through an in-house selection process by BCCI; their national team is led by both captain and vice-captain in each format of cricket played.
Shubman Gill leads the ODI batters rankings while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli rank third and fifth, respectively.
Batsmen
India has long relied upon a star-studded batting lineup to dominate Test cricket. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag were instrumental in cementing India’s dominance on home soil while providing opportunities for younger batsmen such as MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh to maintain its dominance at major ICC tournaments like the World Cup.
Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s recent emergence has added another feather in India’s cap as batsmen, both ranking among the top five of ICC T20I rankings and expected to play major roles for India at the 2026 edition of Men’s T20 World Cup which will take place in their home country – similar to their 2020 victory.
Hardik Pandya has also returned to India’s team for this tournament and will further bolster their batting lineup. Pandya currently ranks number one all-rounder in T20Is and could provide much-needed balance alongside Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Abhishek Sharma.
Ishan Kishan has also earned himself a spot due to his outstanding domestic form. However, Samson will face tough competition for the opening spot from Kishan who recently enjoyed an outstanding IPL season and played extensively over the past year – perhaps earning himself the nod over Gill as partner to Abhishek Sharma up the order.
Bowlers
India is a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC), holding Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 International (T20I) statuses. Governed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), their men’s national cricket team excels across all formats with over 600 victories across Tests, ODIs, T20s tournaments – with five titles won since 2000 and over 600 wins overall – outstripping other sides such as Australia in terms of matches played. In terms of wins against defeats, losses were 528 to 252 with all formats combined!
Indian bowlers in the past, such as Javagal Srinath, Anil Kumble and Mohinder Amarnath were legendary. Unfortunately after 1996 World Cup however, things took an unfortunate turn; even with such legendary batsmen as Sachin Tendulkar and Ravichandran Ashwin on board India struggled outside its subcontinent borders to perform effectively.
Jasprit Bumrah is one of India’s best bowlers and an outstanding wicket-taker. A formidable fast bowler who can swing both ways and pick up quick wickets with yorkers, Bumrah provides thrilling viewing and is potentially improving by working on consistency.
Irfan Pathan is another top bowler on the Indian team and the most experienced bowler within their squad. Able to play all three formats, he can take wickets under any conditions while being an excellent fielder as well. A vital piece of the current Indian squad, it is essential he continues improving his technique.
Young bowlers like Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah are performing admirably for India. Both bowlers possess bright futures ahead of them as they continue to hone their craft game after game – these two will play an instrumental role in helping the Indian team win major tournaments between now and 2025. At present, India ranks second in both ICC T20I rankings as well as fifth ICC ODI rankings; led by Rohit Sharma.
All-Rounders
Indian Premier League, one of the world’s premier T20 leagues, has provided India with a much-needed injection of all-rounders. India has produced some exceptional all-rounders – Anil Kumble is currently leading wicket taker while Ravindra Jadeja and Harbhajan Singh are both known for their economical spin bowling abilities.
India experienced an unparalleled period of success in white-ball cricket during the 1990s, winning two World Cups and three Asia Cups due to Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag as key batting lynchpins who together with Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman formed one of the strongest generations of ODI cricketers ever seen before.
However, in the 1980s they experienced a tough period where they failed to qualify for any World Cup knockout match and suffered an extended decade-long drought before winning another major ICC tournament.
By the late 90s, India had emerged as a worldwide powerhouse in Test and One-Day International Cricket (ODI). Additionally, their success in hosting the Indian Premier League further cemented this dominance.
Since 2008, South Africa have gone undefeated in Test series and reached the final of both cycles of the ICC World Test Championship – an incredible achievement by any measure!
Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) continues to invest heavily in domestic talent development, and this investment has paid dividends. Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson made their way into the national squad after impressive domestic performances such as Ishan’s top run scorer status at 2025 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy; Kishan may replace Abhishek Sharma as openers. Jasprit Bumrah currently leads both Test bowling rankings as well as ODI rankings;
Captain and Key Players
India’s success in cricket can be largely credited to its captains throughout its history. From C. K. Nayudu’s early leadership and Kapil Dev’s 1983 World Cup win, to MS Dhoni’s impressive ICC performance and Virat Kohli’s Test dominance as well as current manager Shubman Gill, all Indian cricket captains have played an instrumental role in creating India’s legacy.
Indian cricket’s current squad features both experienced and promising young talent that has proven itself capable of dominating all three formats of the game. Fuelled by fitness and match awareness training, its versatile nature ensures it remains a key component in every global tournament, whether a Test series at home or an overseas white-ball competition.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli continue to dominate batting rankings for both ODIs and T20Is respectively, with Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya being ranked number three and five, respectively. As for bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah leads Test bowling while Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy rank highly for both formats.
India remains one of the strongest teams in limited-overs cricket despite failing to reach the knockout stage of the 2021 T20 World Cup, thanks to their well-balanced squad consisting of veterans and emerging talent. With many new caps to select from, the future looks bright for India’s cricketers.
Indian Cricket Team players are vast, but several stand out for their skillset and achievements. Hardik Pandya has become an accomplished all-rounder in T20 cricket while Virat Kohli has established himself as one of the greatest batsmen ever seen on Test cricket pitch. Ravi Bishnoi, on the other hand, has emerged as an exceptionally promising fast bowler; currently ranking ninth on ICC Test rankings he is only the second Indian bowler to reach this status.
