India vs South Africa
South Africa is well-known as one of the fiercest competitors in international cricket, renowned for their match-winning batting lineup and versatile bowling attack that have earned them the moniker “the best T20 team”. South Africans also possess excellent home and away performances thanks to players that possess battle hardened expertise – an explanation for their long history of success.
Even after losing two wickets early on, South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen kept threatening India until Jasprit Bumrah dismissed him in the final over of South Africa’s innings; by that point he had scored 39 off 31 balls before being removed off. Quinton de Kock and Kagiso Rabada also made vital contributions with some crucial runs each.
Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai is famed for its lively atmosphere and batting-friendly pitch, offering both teams equal chances at the start of the match before India’s bowlers overtook in the second half. Ravindra Jadeja stood out with economical bowling and lower order contributions that played an instrumental role in India’s triumphant win – their first T20I series victory against South Africa since 2010.
India’s batting lineup
Players have taken to the field as fans clad in Indian colors begin singing their national anthem – an immense momentous occasion for India and their captain Rohit Sharma.
India’s top order batting lineup has struggled, and now more than ever it will be important for them to regain some momentum. South African bowlers threaten an early endgame, but India can fight back by taking more risks.
Axar Patel attempts to hit the ball out of the ground but misfires, being caught at long on by Hendricks. A few more big runs from Indian batsmen would go a long way toward helping them post an impressive total in Barbados.
Anrich Nortje of South Africa bowled an opening maiden over, as South African batsmen looked for singles as soon as they could. Just four runs came off of this over. Aiden Markram then delivered another maiden for South Africa’s Men in Blue side in his next over.
South Africa’s batting lineup
South Africa boasts a formidable batting lineup led by talented players like Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller. Additionally, all-rounder Marco Jansen adds depth while pace attack Kagiso Rabada can be devastating both with new ball and death bowling; Bjorn Fortuin Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi oversee spin bowling duties respectively.
However, it will be the batting depth that could prove most decisive in this match – Laura Wolvaardt, Marizanne Kapp and Anneke Bosch could all provide significant assistance to their sides’ batting line-ups.
India captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and chose to bowl first against South Africa, with Pooja Vastrakar and Radha Yadav taking four and three wickets respectively as India managed to restrict South Africa to just 84 runs within 17.1 overs.
Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma combined brilliantly in India’s chase to achieve an easy 10-wicket win at Kensington Oval – giving their side an unassailable 2-0 advantage and qualifying them for semi-finals.
India’s bowling attack
India’s powerful pace attack has rendered South Africa’s star-studded batting lineup defenseless against India. Jadeja and Yadav’s efforts in keeping opposition batsmen at bay, even without Hardik Pandya, has held Australia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and England batsmen down for just 83 runs between their last two matches.
Bumrah secured his first wicket with a brilliant delivery, pitching up and angling it towards Hendricks who mistimed his shot, hitting it just outside of the stumps before going straight back over. The ball eventually found itself back with him for another bowler to catch!
South Africa suffered early setbacks, losing Laura Wolvaardt, Marizanne Kapp and Anneke Bosch before Pooja Vastrakar caught Anneke. However, Kagiso Rabada’s speedy 27-ball 66 helped the Proteas recover – until Suryakumar Yadav’s stunning catch removed David Miller and stopped them just short of reaching their target.
South Africa’s bowling attack
South Africa’s bowling attack will be key to their hopes of victory against India. Led by captain Faf du Plessis and fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, as well as spinner Keshav Maharaj – who made an impressionful debut appearance at Centurion, taking four wickets while showing his control and dexterity – South Africa has an arsenal of pace and spin bowlers at their disposal that should help secure another Test win for them in 2019.
Proteas officials remain concerned over the fitness of two key fast bowlers: Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada have both been suffering with injuries; however, coach Shakri Conrad remains optimistic they will both be available for selection.
These two wicket-taking specialists boast 115 Test wickets between them and have the potential to produce extraordinary runs of form that could make all the difference in high-scoring matches. Add Anrich Nortje as another pacer, and it becomes obvious why this team holds such potential.
South Africa will look to win their maiden T20 World Cup trophy and end an 11-year wait for an International Cricket Council (ICC) trophy, though heavy rain may impede play. No matter what, fans should anticipate an exciting contest as both sides battle it out to claim victory and secure their respective victory.
India’s spinners
After 13 long years, India finally claimed the ICC World Cup title after defeating perennial runners-up South Africa in an exciting game. Virat Kohli became India’s second World Cup victor since returning from shoulder surgery last year. This victory also marked Kohli’s second success at winning tournament.
Rohit Sharma was overjoyed at his team’s victory and couldn’t hold back tears of joy at its success. “So much hard work went into this, so getting this reward for our hard work is very satisfying,” he exclaimed, before adding, “I can’t describe this feeling and thank everyone enough!”
Aiden Markram, South Africa’s skipper, admitted his team were disappointed but have proven themselves worthy finalists. He went on to say how proud he is of all their players as it all came down to one last ball.
The final over of the game was filled with drama as both bowlers battled for wickets. Following two wickets from Maharaj and one from Nortje, Axar Patel was caught at deep midwicket by Heinrich Klaasen ending India’s hopes of making an comeback. Suryakumar Yadav then took David Miller’s wicket, reducing South Africa to 11/3 and setting India on their way towards victory.
South Africa’s spinners
Cricket South Africa boasts three specialist spin bowlers, but Keshav Maharaj may be its most exciting. A youngster with immense potential, he’s already demonstrated himself in Twenty20 action – and could become a top-class Test bowler should he keep improving.
At the Wanderers, he has already played three first-class matches and boasted an excellent record, bowling 63.5 overs in those matches and taking 10 wickets at an average 22 wicket average with two five-wicket hauls!
Though Maharaj may have made occasional errors, his overall record speaks for itself – one of the finest first-class spinners in recent memory.
He is an adept fielder, capable of bowling both legspin and offbreaks, making him the kind of bowler who can make a major impactful contribution to any team game. Currently, he sits as the third highest wicket-taker in CSA T20 league – hoping that Sunday against India he continues this impressive form!
