England faces many challenges this season, such as increasing left-side width and building composure in the final third. Gareth Southgate could make changes by adding one or both Cole Palmer or Antonio Gordon.
Slovenia boasts a solid defensive setup that’s difficult to breach, while also showcasing an attack-oriented playstyle and resilience against stronger teams, as seen in the England National Football Team vs Slovenia National Football Team Lineups.

England National Football Team
Gareth Southgate will hope that his team can rediscover its form following their goalless draw against Serbia, and come away victorious to secure top spot and an easier last-16 fixture.
The Three Lions will struggle to break through a strong defence led by Jan Oblak from Manchester United – who has made several key stops during this tournament – led by Jan Oblak himself. Supporting him are Zan Karnicnik, Vanja Drkusic, Jaka Bijol and Erik Janza alongside midfielders Petar Stojanovic Adam Cerin Timi Elsnik and Jan Mlakar defenders and midfielders respectively.
England are struggling in midfield. Trent Alexander-Arnold appears to have become too static for their midfield experiment; instead Connor Gallagher should partner Declan Rice and Cole Palmer should come on as an energetic sub for Foden.
Pickford
England interim manager Lee Carsley will hope for a stronger performance from his squad than they showed against Greece last Thursday in a shocking 2-1 home loss. To that end, in Finland he has returned to an established formation, with Marc Guehi pairing John Stones at centre-back while Kyle Walker takes the right-back role while Trent Alexander-Arnold plays an inverted left-back position.
Gareth Southgate left Manchester City playmaker Jack Grealish off of his Euro 2024 squad, so here he starts alongside Declan Rice. Liverpool midfielder Gallagher makes an appearance off the bench along with Birmingham defender Jude Bellingham, who could feature alongside Rice, Alexander-Arnold and Bellingham if selected as part of a deeper role alongside them all. Bellingham made almost an instant impact as he beat his man down the right before throwing in a cross for Kane which Rajkovic blocked before tipping it over.
Walker
Lee Carsley made some key decisions as interim England manager last month, including bringing in players such as Angel Gomes and Noni Madueke while dropping those who hadn’t made an impression at club level. But he kept faith with those who have excelled – Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham and Antonee Robinson have been exceptional performers at their clubs while Leeds United’s Tyler Adams will carry the armband tonight.
Jack Grealish was one of the more notable omissions from Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad, yet still starts alongside Declan Rice at Manchester City. Manchester United full-back Kieran Trippier may play left back; Ipswich Town defender Kobbie Mainoo could replace Trippier. Middlesbrough midfielder Joakim Maehle and Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard also make their debut.
Stones
Gareth Southgate has avoided making too many changes for tonight’s Euro 2024 Group C match against Slovenia. Instead, he has stuck with the same starting eleven that started against Denmark and Serbia; Trent Alexander-Arnold returns as a sub on the bench while regular starter Connor Gallagher remains on it.
England are struggling to generate any momentum in possession, with no major chance created by Bukayo Saka’s superb finish but later disallowed for offside. Harry Kane and Phil Foden both attempt shots but all their efforts were directed straight at Oblak.
Manchester City midfielder Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice drop into a deeper role to assist England keep control of the middle and strengthen pressing resistance against an inspired Slovenian side. RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko may not yet have scored, but his crosses remain dangerous.
Guehi
On Thursday evening, England were taken by surprise as they suffered a shock 2-1 home loss against Greece, leaving them second in their Nations League group and needing to turn around their fortunes against Finland on Sunday. Interim manager Lee Carsley made significant adjustments to his September squad – such as dropping Harry Maguire and Eberechi Eze while also adding Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke – in order to improve England’s chances of victory on Sunday against Finland.
Ezri Konsa of Aston Villa could replace Guehi as the second central defender, while Kieran Trippier and Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka will likely play alongside him on either side.
Kobbie Mainoo and Declan Rice will compete to form the midfield partnership of choice, with Mainoo’s skill on the ball making him more appealing than Rice as an option.
Rice
England have struggled to gain any momentum in the final third against Slovenia despite creating two promising chances, one from Phil Foden which was disallowed for offside. Gareth Southgate recognized that his side needed to improve their performance out of possession and add greater width in midfield.
Slovania could benefit from adding Kobbie Mainoo as an energetic replacement for Kieran Trippier and Cole Palmer to replace Foden in their defensive unit, and Jude Bellingham should continue developing as a centre midfielder.
Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold experiment appears to be over with Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher being picked to partner Declan Rice in the middle of the park. Gallagher is an experienced presser, giving energy and vitality to the national side. Harry Kane should start up front again while youngster Joe Gomez and Ezri Konsa could provide backup on the bench.
Gallagher
Gallagher hails from Dundalk and attended Notre Dame University where he earned All-ACC and NSCAA Second Team accolades, as well as two All-America selections and an All-South Region nod. 2022 MLS SuperDraft selection as well.
At England’s first two games of this tournament, Sterling stood out as their lone shining light, scoring one goal and creating another during a 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano.
The Three Lions appear well placed to reach the knockout rounds at Euro 2024, but Southgate has come under criticism for his use of attacking players. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s experiment of playing midfield has proven ineffective; Gallagher could replace Alexander-Arnold in starting XI alongside Declan Rice; his versatility makes him an invaluable member of their squad.
Saka
Bukayo Saka has emerged as an exciting prospect within England’s squad, having shown his ability at all levels of England’s youth system and having been chosen as part of both Euro 2020 and 2022 squads. He hails from Arsenal.
He was an instrumental contributor in the recent Nations League game against Greece and had one goal disallowed for offside, yet has now been forced out due to suffering calf pain.
Gareth Southgate has made one change to his Three Lions squad, replacing Conor Gallagher with Kobbie Mainoo to provide additional attacking options alongside Phil Foden, Kieran Trippier, Declan Rice and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Cole Palmer will provide energy and personality in midfield. Originally hailing from Ealing he featured for England U19s and MU16s before making his senior debut for England.
Bellingham
England will hope to avoid another draw and advance to the knockout stage when they face Slovenia at RheinEnergieStadion on Saturday, when Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jack Grealish return from injury; with Southgate likely switching back to more traditional tactics.
Kieran Trippier and Phil Foden both produced promising first half performances for England, with Trippier creating one of their best chances which was disallowed for offside despite appearing offside himself. Unfortunately they struggled to break through Slovenia’s tight defensive structure. At half time Southgate introduced Kobbie Mainoo for Conor Gallagher, giving him some much-needed energy and flair on the left flank; Foden, Bellingham, and Cole Palmer could also provide attacking options should England need some. They all should combine well, with Palmer providing some pace down left flank.
Foden
Foden has become an integral part of Lee Carsley’s plans, who has charged the Manchester City player with scoring more goals for England. Carsley previously served as an assistant under Gareth Southgate, suggesting he prefers seeing Foden play a deeper role rather than up front on either flank.
Carsley’s decision to field an attacking lineup against Greece backfired, prompting questions over his credentials to lead England in full-time. But he must ensure Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer and Jude Bellingham are given every chance to shine as an attacking trio; Ollie Watkins and Noni Madueke should also have space to roam – these players present significant threat for any defense – creating problems across England’s squad which boasts plenty of talent and maturity among its young players.
