Tilak Varma vs Shubman Gill
After both teams experienced defeat in their opening matches of the tournament, Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians will both be looking to secure their first victory against one another at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday. Below we provide key stats before this clash takes place.
Tilak Varma produced an outstanding 72-ball unbeaten 97 against Delhi Capitals in his last match, smashing five sixes and four fours to lead MI to an easy victory. As his performance made headlines worldwide, his fans at MI are clearly delighted that Varma is back playing for their side!
Shubman Gill has struggled for Mumbai thus far. After being dropped in the penultimate over by Hardik Pandya – which did not go down well with many cricket fans – Shubman Gill has shown signs of progress since being reinstated and will look to continue this form against Gujarat Titans.
Mumbai openers have done an outstanding job maintaining momentum in their innings; however, one of their middle order batsmen needs to step up and score big for them to have any hope of claiming victory. Shubman Gill has attempted to force out runs but without success so far; when trying to hit Mohammed Siraj he misses and the ball goes straight to square-leg fielder who was perfectly situated to make the catch.
Mumbai Indians batsmen have struggled to gain momentum on this track due to the bowlers’ efforts at restricting run rate, leaving their batsmen struggling for any rhythm or consistency on this pitch. Experience is sorely lacking among their batting lineup and players like Shubman Gill (one of their finest batters) need someone else who can stay at the crease and score regularly; alone he cannot do it for too long a period.
Sai Sudharsan vs Kagiso Rabada
Sai Sudharsan is in terrific form for the Titans but must remain wary against Kagiso Rabada who has produced a fantastic spell with the ball. Rabada induces a leading edge on his first ball of an over and Sudharsan put it down at midwicket for a single. After that he drove hard and straight towards point for another single to bring their scoreboard total up to 50 in just over 6 overs.
On a day when it seemed that Mumbai Indians’ best option for success lay in batting, their lower order let them down on an extremely slow surface. Jos Buttler and Shubman Gill both performed admirably but required assistance from middle order players to keep up their run rate.
Hardik Pandya won the toss and decided to bowl on an expectedly helpful pitch for batsmen; instead it provided ample opportunities for their Titans openers who raced past 66 runs before slowing down due to wear on the surface.
Sudharsan showed remarkable resilience by playing some impressive shots and helping GT post an impressive total of 196-8. His 41-ball 63 was key in keeping GT’s innings competitive as opposed to collapsing like they did against Rajasthan Royals in their initial match of the tournament.
Shubman Gill has taken to playing slower balls well and smashing them into the stands with ease, but was unfortunately caught at deep midwicket by Prasidh Krishna off Rabada’s bowling shortly thereafter. Shubman will look to find some form for the remainder of this game.
Hardik Pandya vs Trent Boult
Mumbai Indians finally managed to secure their inaugural win of the season against Gujarat Titans at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium after an inauspicious start. Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan put on an excellent partnership, amassing 78 runs between them before Sudharsan was caught at long-on by Rahul Tewatia off a perfect yorker from Trent Boult.
Hardik Pandya led Mumbai Indians with 41 runs off 37 deliveries but also was ultimately responsible for their loss, being dismissed after scoring an 11-ball 17. It was an amazing display of faith by MI management to send him in as number four in place of regular skipper Jasprit Bumrah.
Pandya misjudged a slower ball hitting short on off stump and failed to uppercut it, eventually being bowled. Next he misjudged another slower delivery on leg side which he misjudged and hit to mid off for another single.
He then attempted a paddle sweep, only to be overwhelmed by its pace; not having enough speed to get past slip fielder. Hoping he would reach over and lob over wicketkeeper at deep square-leg but was caught.
Trent Boult bowled a slow delivery on off stump that Buttler attempted to paddle sweep but missed entirely; it hit his pads instead and was caught by Long-On for his wicket.
Buttler then attempted a hook but the ball flew straight to Mitchell Santner at long-on and caused an appeal for lbw, though this was ultimately disproved and Buttler got off the mark. Unfortunately for Buttler he tried unsuccessfully to hit Santner over the ropes; when that attempt failed his backfoot heave went for one run as Buttler walked off without reaching 50 partnerships with Sai Sudharsan – his loss at that stage put too much strain on their innings overall performance.
Mitchell Santner vs Deepak Chahar
As teams prepare to face off against one another in an epic struggle for supremacy, teams are getting ready to battle it out for supremacy. Mumbai Indians hope to maintain their winning momentum while Gujarat Titans hope to build off of their strong showing in their first two matches of IPL 2019. Their match will take place at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad; both have played six times before with each boasting strong records against each other.
Gujarat defeated Rajasthan by an innings and 63 runs during the previous edition of this competition, led by Jos Buttler and Sai Sudharsan who have both excelled this season for their side. Given Ahmedabad’s slow wicket, their batsmen must perform to achieve maximum scoring totals.
As soon as Hardik Pandya won the toss, he chose to bowl alongside Deepak Chahar. Together they tried to stop Mumbai from scoring runs, with both bowlers showing notable skill during their spells – however Prasidh Krishna made an even greater impression by picking up two wickets to give Gujarat an advantage.
Sherfane Rutherford was caught out trying to play an aerial off-drive against Chahar’s well outside off full delivery and looked quite pleased with his decision. Chahar then turned back around towards Rohit Sharma and smiled while waiting for him to come over back over towards him.
Mitchell Santner will make his Titans debut this game after being purchased at auction at a base price of Rs 2 crore to provide depth in their top order, which could prove instrumental for success this season.
He may not have made an impressive debut yet, but that won’t deter him. He will continue working hard in the nets and fighting until he receives an opportunity. His teammates depend heavily on him to remain competitive at the top of their league table.
