New Zealand are poised to achieve an unprecedented record whitewash against India at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru in a Test match. Rachin Ravindra and Will Young have kept New Zealand’s innings going after Tom Latham and Devon Conway were dismissed early on the day.
In this article, we will discuss the main points or high lights of India National Cricket Team vs New Zealand National Cricket Team Match Scorecard.
India: 107 for 3
After an initially slow start, Sarfaraz Khan and Rishabh Pant stepped up to give India a respectable total on the board. Their combined 97-run partnership kept New Zealand at bay. Sarfaraz dominated the first session with deft dabs before finishing unbeaten on 109 off just 103 balls; his innings was much-needed return to form; while Pant was steady as ever with 55 off 93 deliveries.
In the final session, New Zealand were unable to take control of the game from India and lost wickets at regular intervals. India’s spinners held them back, forcing batsmen to think twice before taking any risks during play.
At stumps, the Kiwis had scored only 180/3 and still trail by 134 runs with one day left to play. Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell seemed content to take it easy by rotating strike and trying to build up a solid foundation.
Kuldeep Yadav made an attack-minded comeback to attack in the middle overs, but was unable to break through Latham and Conway’s stubborn defence. They played sensibly, rotating strike and occasionally getting lucky. Latham edged Siraj into slips for one run in 15th over, while Conway hit him for four four over 19th.
The Kiwis will hope that they can put together another solid partnership and turn this game into a contest in their second innings, hoping that their bowlers can maintain pressure to stop India scoring big runs; though that won’t be easy with Kohli and Rahul in such good form. A win here would ensure a levelled series. Play begins at 14:45 local time at Chinnaswamy Stadium with broadcast on Hotstar; or stream it live through Jio TV.
New Zealand: 186 for 4
As the Kiwis attempted to find some stability in their innings, they were helped by having an ample lead to work with. Unfortunately, Indian bowlers made their task even harder by picking wickets regularly to break any partnerships; nevertheless, openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tom Latham managed to score some runs during the opening session to give their team a decent start here in India.
New Zealand was left reeling when their batting began to collapse, losing both batsmen in rapid succession. Their fall placed immense strain on the visitors but Glenn Phillips and Will Young quickly came in to form strong partnerships that eventually won them the game.
But, Bumrah broke up their partnership shortly afterwards when his second delivery of the over was played to Latham who was playing with his front foot and went for an outside edge stroke off it, moving from off-to-leg before sliding past his outside edge and past his outside edge of his front foot batsman – prompting an appeal for LBW but umpire did not agree and India declined DRS review.
Devon Conway and Ish Sodhi struggled to make runs off bad balls. Both batsmen committed some reckless shots that did them no favours either, until spinners came into play; both batsmen were dismissed in similar fashion by spinners’ attempts at disruption; these spinners didn’t allow batsmen any time to settle in before picking up wickets regularly.
New Zealand’s middle order then showed some signs of instability; however, Rachin Ravindra and Tim Southee played well to maintain New Zealand’s lead and secure an advantage of 356 runs for them in their favour. If India want to keep pace with New Zealand in this Test series then Indian bowlers must step up their game quickly in Pune on Thursday 24th.
India: 186 for 5
After an inauspicious start in the first Test, India made a dramatic turnaround when two partnerships appeared to reach substantial proportions – only for both partnerships to end prematurely as batsmen fell at key moments of impact on the game – openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma falling quickly, while their lower order failed to capitalize on such promising starts.
KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer kept the score moving with some careful and effective strike rotation, until Ebadot Hossain gained some extra bounce with his delivery, producing an edge from Iyer as he attempted to pull from outside off stump. Their partnership was then broken by Hossain’s pacemanry; who produced an edge when Iyer attempted to drag from outside off stump.
Rishabh Pant and Sarfraz Ahmed began a promising partnership at wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant’s boundary shot; both batsmen took full advantage of some good cricket conditions as they put New Zealand into a dominant position at lunch on day two; New Zealand led by 136 runs at lunch.
Rachin Ravindra and Tim Southee led New Zealand’s afternoon session by amassing an incredible lead, thanks to some brilliant batting from Rachin Ravindra and Southee. Together they outwitted Indian bowlers by amassing more than 400 runs for the second wicket; Ravindra finished up his innings with an unbeaten 134 while Southee made an unbeaten 65 as the visitors raced ahead to 356-6 at tea time.
Late wickets saw the home side fall behind as they attempted to make up lost ground in the final session, but with some strong batting from Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar India did not concede any more wickets as they completed their fifth win out of six Tests played at Bengaluru.
Bumrah continues his outstanding spell and strikes again to dismiss Tom Latham for a duck. By using pace and swing to penetrate under Latham’s batsman and force a straight drive that travels to a fielder at long on. On his next over, Latham is outpaced for pace by Rohit at second slip and the ball smacks against his pads before being caught by him at second slip.
New Zealand: 189 for 6
New Zealand managed to recover after suffering an inauspicious start where two wickets fell within three balls, thanks to some patient batting from Tom Latham and Will Young. Frustrating Indian bowlers, they led New Zealand’s side to 356 runs – Tom Latham scored 134 while captain Tim Southee contributed 65, giving their side an insurmountable lead.
New Zealand batsmen found themselves under immense pressure defending the target, as Bumrah and Siraj kept taking wickets at regular intervals to undermine New Zealand’s attempt at reaching it. Losing players quickly, even with Glenn Phillips providing quick fire cameos, the Kiwis struggled to maintain an adequate run rate.
Bumrah continued his impressive spell with the ball and removed Devon Conway. The Kiwi batsman had looked confident when trying to hit past point, only for it to end up getting an edge and hit out of play. While no decision was given out initially by umpires, Rohit Sharma convinced himself to seek review which resulted in three red cards for Conway’s dismissal.
India’s spinners then took control, picking off the Kiwi lower order to put an end to any hopes of a comeback by New Zealand. Yashasvi Jaiswal fell for a duck before Rohit Sharma was caught at gully for just ten runs; Samisoni Kuldeep then inducing an edge from Matt Henry led to two more openers leaving in quick succession from New Zealand’s opening pair – Yashasvi Jaiswal for duck and Rohit Sharma who could only manage ten before being caught at gully by Rohit Sharma before wicketkeeper Kuldeep caused his innings to collapse quickly for New Zealand in quick succession from opening pair Yashasvi Jaiswal who lost both openers within hours – followed by Samisoni Kuldeep who induces edges from Matt Henry before Samisoni Kuldeep inducing edge from Matt Henry leaving them struggling.
Now it is Ish Sodhi’s turn to do his damage – and they certainly did so well in Bengaluru with Ish Sodhi in their side who could generate plenty of movement and bounce on this Bengaluru surface. His first delivery struck a blow against Latham’s outside edge with its probing delivery before Latham attempted his reverse sweep but only managed an inside edge towards leg slip, leading him into singles play as his New Zealand teammates adjusted to their slow bowling conditions.
