Day 1
After rain delayed the start of play at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on the opening day, India and New Zealand have resumed their contest on a dry surface. Both sides will look to seize any opportunities offered by their opponent to secure victory and keep alive any hopes for qualifying for World Test Championship final spots.
With the ball, hosts have struggled to contain New Zealand, who made an aggressive start with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill combining for a 53-run partnership in their opening inning. Once the pair fell however, wicketkeeper Tim Southee took full control at the top of his order, quickly turning things back around for his team.
Kane Williamson of New Zealand won the toss and decided to bat first, but their middle order quickly collapsed, giving New Zealand an early lead. Rachin Ravindra and Tim Southee made valuable contributions with fifties but Bumrah and Siraj made sure the hosts faced constant pressure throughout.
Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja took four wickets as New Zealand were bowled out on 235, giving India an insurmountable lead after day 1. Day 2
Rohit Sharma won the toss after an overnight of rain and elected to bat first, only for this decision to backfire as Indian batsmen struggled against New Zealand’s pace attack. Matt Henry and William O’Rourke bowled splendidly to limit India to only 46 runs; making this home ground record the lowest total ever achieved on an Indian home ground!
New Zealand began the second session by looking to build on their promising start, as Devon Conway and Tom Latham batted patiently while rotating strike. Both batsmen managed to strike some boundaries but weren’t quite ready to break open the door just yet; that changed quickly when Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah kept up pressure while decreasing run-rate.
Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar then brought the game into its final session with a 136-run stand, appearing as though India were going to close in on New Zealand for a substantial first innings lead, only for two overs of reckless cricket to reopen wounds reopen and New Zealand end the day on an upbeat note.
As the match neared its conclusion, spinners proved pivotal once more; Jadeja and Washington each collected one wicket to ensure India did not settle into their second innings comfortably, keeping run rates around three or four per over.
Day 3
Indian’s top order had become unraveled during an unexpected run of wickets against New Zealand, but the partnership of Rachin Ravindra and Tim Southee helped them take back control. Their hard hitting combination frustrated Indian bowlers while leading New Zealand to an impressive 402 before poor lighting forced them back in again to bat again. New Zealand are on the cusp of making history as they whitewash India in three-test series; one wicket away from an unforgettable win!
India began the third day after an extended rain delay hoping to start their innings off quickly, but they struggled to put together an opening pair capable of producing any fruitful innings and were soon forced into chasing an aggressive target. Furthermore, their opponents found life increasingly difficult as Jasprit Bumrah and Siraj made life more difficult for them.
Glenn Phillips strikes again to hand New Zealand an emphatic win! Ravichandran Ashwin attempted a reverse sweep but missed and Tom Blundell caught it for an excellent catch. On his next delivery Phillips clean bowled Akash Deep for a duck as they edge closer towards an historic victory for New Zealand.
India are in dire straits here! Yashasvi Jaiswal gets hit on the upper arm off Tim Southee’s delivery, yet is unable to hold onto it as umpire signals LBW. After appealing against this decision via DRS he opts for DRS but it remains upheld – this leaves India needing to score 148 runs in just 18 overs to avoid whitewash against New Zealand.
Day 4
New Zealand took control of the final day of the second Test in Bengaluru to take an impressive 2-0 advantage in the series with both bat and ball, scoring 402 runs to open up an unassailable 356-run lead over India with Rachin Ravindra hitting an unbeaten 134 to lead them.
India’s lower middle order struggled, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma falling early and leaving their team trailing by a significant margin with two new balls still being delivered. Yet Sarfaraz Khan and Rishabh Pant kept pushing forward, inch closer towards an unlikely triumphant victory.
Bad light cut short a gripping fourth day of cricket with India trailing by 107 runs; New Zealand must score another 113 to secure victory and complete their unlikely series whitewash against their hosts.
Jasprit Bumrah delivers a fuller ball that angles into Will Young’s pads, and as he attempts to go for the sweep it gets an inside edge and goes past his stumps – an obvious appeal for leg before wicket but Rohit Sharma turns it down.
5.8: Rachin Ravindra to Pant, short on off, Pant slog sweeps and gets an inside edge that hits his pads before first slip makes an excellent catch in front of them for first slip to take a brilliant catch despite an outstanding review by umpires; unfortunately they were unable to change their decision.
India captain Virat Kohli steps out to bat with his side trailing by 103 runs and looking to end their 12-year losing streak against New Zealand in India. To do so, however, they’ll require him to produce an exceptional innings alongside wicketkeeper Sarfaraz Khan who hopes to add to their already impressive tally of international wickets.
Day 5
India and New Zealand played out another full day of Test cricket before calling it quits for good due to poor light and heavy rain, forcing early stumps. Bumrah used his new ball effectively once more, dismissing Latham and Devon Conway to put India in control ahead of their second innings.
New Zealand needed only 94 runs to win with two wickets remaining and they began their chase at about an hour into it with two wickets still available to them. Their chase proved challenging against pace and swing from Kiwi bowlers; eventually the visitors were skittled for 46, their third lowest total ever scored at home and far below what is typically reached in matches like these.
Matt Henry and William O’Rourke ran through the lower order to reduce New Zealand’s deficit to 45 runs; with their teammates’ help in taking some stunning catches they managed to close it quickly – giving New Zealand enough momentum for a stunning win in Bengaluru after 38-years!
