The 1947-48 Test Series
The 1947-48 Test series between India and Australia remains one of the most unforgettable contests ever. Both sides put in impressive performances during this series – Rahul Dravid made history with a double century while Harbhajan Singh scored four wickets en route to winning his maiden test series Down Under for India. It marked their inaugural win there.
Australians seized an early advantage during the first test at Brisbane by scoring 674 runs in their opening innings with Bradman making an exceptional 201. Indian batsmen struggled against Australian bowlers’ pace and bounce; Ernie Toshack excelled by taking five wickets for just 66 runs!
On the second day, rain temporarily interrupted play before Australia managed to get some wickets before the day ended with them on 389/6 and India struggled in their response; scoring only 188 runs despite Gogumal Kishenchand and Dattu Phadkar both making their test debuts for India.
India was in a delicate situation at Melbourne in their fourth test match when they lost both wickets for only six runs in quick succession, but then Arthur Morris and Don Bradman’s magnificent partnership of 70 brought back into contention the Indian side.
India were quickly able to add runs before eventually being all out for 296 runs, enough for them to avoid series defeat but their loss of three wickets in their second innings meant they needed to win both remaining tests in order to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Rohit Sharma will lead an 18-man squad into Australia to defend a five-match series against Australia beginning November 22. Although Mohammed Shami will miss this trip due to injury, their squad boasts world-class bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj who could help set their mark at home against Australia. Leg-spinner Todd Murphy earned their maiden national call-up alongside fast bowlers such as Jasprit Bumrah.
The 1947-48 ODI Series
India and Australia share one of the fiercest rivalries in international cricket, having clashed for years to determine supremacy across Test, ODI and T20 formats. Their battle has produced some epic moments and memorable matches – this timeline showcases some major moments and events in their rich history.
The 1947-48 Test series between India and Australia marked their official tour, as well as Sir Donald Bradman leading an Australian team predominantly consisting of local players. While they came very close to winning it all, their last game fell by only 16 runs at Melbourne Stadium.
India played nine first class matches during this tour and managed only two victories (winning two, losing seven). Though individual performances by Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath and Kris Srikkanth provided some relief, their batsmen failed to work effectively as an ensemble unit.
Gavaskar and Amarnath both scored hundreds in the second Test at Brisbane while Bishan Bedi took 10 wickets as India posted an imposing total score of 604-4; unfortunately for India though, rain interrupted play when Australia needed only 59 runs to secure victory.
Australia won the third and final Test at Sydney with an innings and 141-run victory, led by Greg Chappell’s double century, Dennis Lillee’s wicket sharing, Len Pascoe’s contributions, V.V.S Laxman’s unbeaten century as consolation, and Len Pascoe and Dennis Lillee sharing wickets to secure Australia a win.
The three-match ODI series that begins November 24 will see some familiar names return to India’s squad, such as Ravindra Jadeja and Ishan Kishan after some time away, though captain Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Pat Cummins will miss due to injury – they will be replaced by opener Rohit Sharma and pacer Mohammed Siraj respectively. Both teams will look to find winning ways after recent disappointing results.
The 2014-15 Test Series
The 2014-15 India-Australia Test series will go down as one of the fiercest contests ever witnessed between these nations. This battle was epitomised by Phillip Hughes’ tragic death from being struck in the neck by a short-pitched delivery just prior to beginning this Test series; yet both teams showed excellent cricket against tough opposition to draw the four-match series 1-1 and make history! Particularly memorable was India captain MS Dhoni and Australia captain Steve Smith engaging in some epic duels throughout, such as their 376 run partnership during Kolkata that many consider one of history’s great Test matches ever played.
Both sides will look to take an important step forward in the upcoming series, yet questions remain regarding key players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja who have been integral components of India’s recent dominance. Their ageing bodies and fluctuations in performance raise concerns over their continued ability to perform at a high level for an extended period.
India’s young players have shown great promise over the last two years. Shubman Gill made an immediate impact upon debut, while Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant have excelled against New Zealand. Mohammad Shami and Washington Sundar are two other rising stars that should be watched closely.
Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are experienced fast bowlers that pose a considerable threat to India’s batting line-up, while Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav will play key roles in countering Australia’s powerful batting attack.
India-Australia 2024-25 Test Series is eagerly awaited, due to their exciting historical rivalry. Both sides aim to make history during this series by adding another chapter to India-Australia cricketing ties. Starting February 9 in Nagpur and concluding on March 21 with Mumbai! Don’t miss all the action!
The 2020-21 Test Series
After making history in 2018-19 by winning its maiden series victory Down Under, India repeated their success and retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. India showed incredible resilience and determination throughout this series – from suffering a crushing defeat at Melbourne Cricket Ground before returning for an unprecedented comeback victory at The Gabba despite injury setbacks to ensure success and create history!
Indian side was plagued with injuries, with star opener Rohit Sharma and many first-choice bowlers experiencing periods out. To compensate, many youngsters such as T Natarajan and Washington Sundar who had only played limited-overs cricket previously were called up – both would go on to play an integral part in helping India win World Cup final.
Cheteshwar Pujara led India’s comeback in Test series against Australia thanks to an outstanding unbeaten 91. The 32-year-old batsman held on against blows before breaking Australia’s fortress through partnership with Rishabh Pant. Together they displayed determination as India overcame their Aussie foe.
India’s bowling performance during this match, led by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, was impressive. Australia captain Tim Paine gave India an unexpected win by mishandling several chances; dropping Pant twice during Sydney chase and missing Hanuma Vihari stumping opportunity as examples of missed chances by himself.
This four-match series will see both teams make every effort to put forward their best effort and return to winning ways. Fans should expect an electrifying cricket contest between both sides; over time these rivals have enjoyed an intense rivalry, which should carry over into this year’s match-up between two of the world’s most powerful and unpredictable sides. It promises to be an electrifying battle!
