CSK bowlers were dominant at Chepauk to end KKR’s unbeaten start to this edition of IPL. Ravindra Jadeja took 3/18 and was named Player of the Match.
FOUR! Ruturaj Gaikwad hits an exquisite bottom-handed shot that goes past third man towards long on. An outstanding shot from our captain. In this article, we will discuss the high lights of Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders Match Scorecard.
Sunil Narine
Sunil Narine’s performance against Delhi Capitals was nothing short of outstanding. The mystery spinner limited their batsmen to just 128 runs over 20 overs while taking five wickets, sending back dangerous batsmen like David Warner and Marcus Stoinis back. Additionally, Narine dispatched many lower order batsmen, such as Kedar Jadhav.
As Narine came in at number 5, he unleashed his fury upon Delhi bowlers with six fours and three sixes, taking KKR’s total to 195-6. Additionally, captain Shreyas Iyer and Ramandeep Singh delivered key runs at crucial moments in KKR’s innings.
Ekana Cricket Stadium has long been famed for being a batsmen-friendly environment and KKR’s batting lineup did not disappoint on that scorecard. Venkatesh Iyer (52/26 off 26 overs) and Shubman Gill (51/43 overs) combined to score 91 runs off 10.4 overs for KKR at half way mark to establish themselves as one of the teams to beat.
Once separated, however, their middle order collapsed rapidly and KKR were forced to chase an enormous target with two key players such as Andre Russell and Robin Uthappa leaving them short-handed in quick succession.
Indian Premier League 2024 season is all about big matches and Chennai Super Kings proved it once again when facing Kolkata Knight Riders at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium. Ravindra Jadeja returned impressive bowling figures of 3-18 as CSK handed KKR their first defeat this season; Ruturaj Gaikwad scored unbeaten 67 to help CSK to an eight wicket win with 14 balls remaining!
Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer led his Chennai Super Kings side to an eight-wicket win against Kolkata Knight Riders at Fortress Chepauk despite losing the toss. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sunil Narine set an excellent foundation with their half-century partnership for KKR, but Iyer was in fine form as he hit four sixes and five fours to help CSK defeat them within 38 balls.
Spinner Ravindra Jadeja stood out as CSK’s stand-out bowler during the first innings, taking three wickets. Jadeja sent back Raghuvanshi leg before trying for a reverse sweep before dismissing Narine by trapping him lbw off an incorrect slog shot in his next over. Jadeja’s two strikes allowed them to limit KKR to 85-5 at one stage while pacer Mustafizur Rahman provided support with two wickets of his own.
Ruturaj Gaikwad of CSK won the toss and decided to bowl against visiting KKR. Three changes were made with Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur and Mustafizur Rahman coming into his side.
Sunil Narine of Kolkata Knight Riders looked in good form as he struck nine fours and three sixes in 35 balls for KKR, adding 51 runs in the last over. Venkatesh Iyer also contributed greatly in scoring runs for them both.
Dwayne Bravo
West Indies all-rounder Lara has been an instrumental member of multiple title winning campaigns and captained franchise teams in numerous leagues worldwide. His extensive experience will prove invaluable for the development of young KKR players and will serve them well during crucial T20 situations. He understands both T20’s format as well as captaining requirements under pressure situations.
Kolkata have shown promise despite losing two of their first three matches and this victory was much-needed. They now sit fourth on the table; beating Delhi next time would see them become leaders of Group F.
Hussey and Vijay set the pace for Chennai’s run chase with an outstanding opening partnership of 97 runs from 62 balls – they were particularly ruthless against spinners as both players hit three sixes and a boundary each in this run chase.
But the home team’s bowling was unable to contain the damage and regularly lost wickets after the powerplay had ended. Sunil Narine, Vaibhav Arora and Mitchell Starc proved costly for visitors; spinners couldn’t control dewdrop and batsmen scored freely with ease.
Dhoni guided Chennai through their slow start and ensured they reached the target with eight runs off the final over, thanks to McCullum who scored his sixth fifty in this season with 43-ball 62 (6×4, 3×6) from 43 balls (6×4, 3×6; unfortunately he failed to reach century as his bat miscued Bhatia’s penultimate delivery; this meant that KKR lost their unbeaten streak against CSK and suffered their first defeat this season.
Kuldeep Yadav
Before the match, both teams made one change. For Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Anukul Roy was replaced by Angkrish Raghuvanshi while Delhi Capitals brought back Sumit Kumar.
Kuldeep Yadav provided early wickets for DC with his left-arm wrist spinner bowling. Kuldeep is currently enjoying an outstanding run of form, having taken four wickets in their previous encounter. Kuldeep again impressed during this game.
The 25-year-old started off his bowling with an effective legbreak googly that bowler Shreyas Iyer for 42 off 37 balls before dismissing Andre Russell with a flighted delivery that West Indies batsman attempted to cut but failed at.
But KKR survived and managed to achieve a competitive total with their score reaching 144 for six, thanks to Rana and Rinku Singh’s incredible 62-run partnership that propelled them forward. Meanwhile, CSK’s bowlers kept things tight at either end.
Tushar Deshpande had Phil Salt out with the first ball of the over. Deshpande used an offspinner’s short length ball aimed away from Phil, which caused him to attempt slamming but Ravindra Jadeja at backward point was quick enough to catch it and keep play going.
Mustafizur Rahman and Chetan Sakariya began strong against KKR by swinging the new ball effectively, keeping their middle order quiet. Kuldeep was left to pick up three final wickets. First he used legbreak to trap Venkatesh Iyer lbw; shortly thereafter he bowled short balls that Sakariya attempted to hit backwards but missed to be caught by Dhoni at short midwicket.
Mitchell Starc
Mitchell Starc has made an impactful comeback from an uneven start in IPL 2019 to become one of KKR’s key bowlers. The Australian has been among IPL’s most economical bowlers this season and he could earn himself selection to the Australian T20 World Cup squad with his performance against CSK being an important step forward.
Starc started the match without taking a wicket but ended it with two. He snapped up Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shahbaz Ahmed in quick succession in the third over to put Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) under pressure, and could have then dismissed Rahul Tripathi off the next ball with a yorker which hit leg stump. But instead opted against seeking review when they reached 45 for 4 in powerplay overs.
Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Shankar of Kolkata Knight Riders shared an unbroken 97-run opening stand off just 57 balls to give their home team an excellent chance at victory. Both batsmen scored half-centuries as KKR raced to 145 for 9 in 18 overs.
Ruturaj Gaikwad’s side did their best, yet were unable to contain the run rate and ultimately succumbed to their sixth consecutive IPL defeat this year. Their performances both batting and bowling must improve – especially during powerplay – while death overs must also show an improvement compared to past defeats against Mumbai in Round 3. There is much for them to reflect upon and prepare for as they prepare to enter more matches this IPL season.
