Pakistan vs South Africa
Pakistan have suffered two defeats at this year’s Cricket World Cup and are struggling to stay competitive. Their next three matches – against Bangladesh, New Zealand and England – will determine their chances of reaching the semi-finals.
Pakistan and South Africa engaged in another thrilling match that featured multiple highs and lows. Babar Azam’s unbeaten century gave South Africa hope of returning to victory, but a late wicketless surge from Pakistan ensured they would emerge victorious at Durban.
Pakistan won the toss and elected to field. Mieke de Ridder made her T20I debut for Pakistan while Shawaal Zulfiqar made her ODI debut. Zulfiqar and Shahida Akhtar shared an unbeaten opening stand of 59 runs before Zaman produced an astounding run-out to get rid of Proteas opener Shahida Akhtar.
Akhtar and Zulfiqar built another crucial partnership of 95 runs before Sharjeel Khan bowled an excellent spell without conceding a wicket, bowling tight overs before finally taking down AB de Villiers on ball four of the final over.
South Africa began their pursuit of their target with a poor start, losing two key wickets early – Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock both to Shaheen Afridi who conceded 19 runs off his over and the Proteas needed until their fifth over to reach double figures.
But the Proteas struggled to capitalize on their start. After Bavuma fell victim to Mohammad Wasim in the seventh over, Rassie van der Dussen and Heinrich Klaasen both hit two successive boundaries before Van der Dussen reached 50 off only 15 balls, taking just 15 balls more to add 37 runs together.
After the break, Pakistan captain Babar Azam introduced Haris Rauf into his attack. Rauf immediately struck when his drive hit Tabraiz Shamsi on his pads – though an umpire’s decision stood firm upon review.
Proteas were unable to build on this momentum, losing four wickets quickly after having started strongly and falling back into trouble. De Kock and Temba Bavuma’s late boundaries helped the Proteas finish strongly but weren’t enough to save them from relegation to Qualifiers. Pakistan have hope of staying in top four but any further three losses will likely seal their fate; one against Bangladesh being most crucial among their remaining three fixtures before playing three T20Is against New Zealand and England that may determine their chances of staying there or progressing to last eight.
