Afghanistan vs West Indies

Afghanistan and West Indies meet for their last Group C match at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet in St Lucia on September 15th. Both teams are unbeaten so far in this tournament and a win by either will ensure qualification to Super 8 stage. Rovman Powell-led Windies enter into this match after their 13-run win over New Zealand while Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan have just secured a 7-wicket triumph against Papua New Guinea.

Afghanistan and West Indies Have Played 13 Matches Since 2017 Its Since 2017, these teams have played 13 meetings. Out of these matches, Afghanistan won 10 and lost three to the Windies while their average scoring averaged out to be 207 runs per innings during these contests; however, both have scored less than 200 in their recent meetings.

Last time these teams met in Nagpur, Afghanistan won by six runs. This contest marked their only meeting during this World Cup tournament.

As both teams possess impressive batting stocks, a high-scoring affair is anticipated this time around. The Windies boast Rovman Powell, Shimron Hetmyer, Johnson Charles and Sherfane Rutherford; on the Afghanistan team are Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran Naveen Ul Haq and Azmatullah Omarzai among many other formidable batsmen who should help determine its outcome.

Windies batsmen were dominant against Afghanistan bowling attack during the first half of their innings, as Powell and Pooran hit multiple fours and sixes to build up an early lead of 95 runs in just 6.5 overs. Once drinks had been taken, Windies easily completed 13.4 overs for their total score of 205/3.

In the second half, both teams struggled to maintain wickets as both struggled to keep run rates down and wickets intact. Windies took regular wickets courtesy of Obed McCoy’s brilliant spell in which he picked up three wickets for 14 runs while Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hosein managed run rates to prevent Afghanistan from seizing control of the match.

Pooran created drama in the final over of his innings by smashing three sixes off Azmatullah Omarzai to set a new T20 international career batting mark of 128, surpassing Chris Gayle’s previous mark of 124. Although West Indies lost to Afghanistan, they can take great pride in their performance as they put up an admirable fight against an equally skilled side in T20 cricket. This match demonstrated why Windies are such a feared side. Their bowlers were equally impressive as they held Afghanistan to scores below 100 in all three innings. Now looking forward to South Africa in their next match, and hopefully Andre Russell making his long awaited comeback after missing their previous match due to injury – fans will hope he continues his strong form and continue scoring centuries.
